I have been in Tanzania for the past three weeks doing malaria research, spending the first two in Stonetown, Zanzibar at the only tertiary public hospital on the island, Mnazi Mmoja, and the third back on the mainland in Bagamoyo, about 80 km from the largest city in the country, Dar es Salaam. Pictured here is an alley in Stonetown. The buildings are beautiful, and nearly all made of stone – hence the name. The townspeople are incredibly friendly, and the town itself has a lot of tourists around – something typical of Zanzibar, where the main revenue comes from tourism. However, entire sectors exist outside of this. For example, my host family in Stonetown owns a restaurant that makes great chicken and chapati!
